Community Development

Supporting the well-being and long-term development of communities in the Project Area of Influence is an important part of Papua LNG’s social performance approach. Working with local partners, institutions and community leaders, the project supports initiatives that strengthen local capacity and improve quality of life.

Community development efforts rest on five pillars: Health, Education, Law and Order, Energy and Business. Together, these pillars help strengthen local communities by improving access to essential services, supporting skills development, enhancing safety and security, expanding access to reliable energy and creating opportunities for sustainable economic growth.

Law & Order

Through close collaboration with law enforcement agencies, community leaders and government stakeholders, Papua LNG supports initiatives that strengthen safety, security and social cohesion. This includes logistical support for local policing infrastructure, provision of equipment to enhance communication and river patrol capabilities, and participation in collaborative efforts to prevent and respond to gender-based violence. Together, these actions help foster a safer and more secure environment for communities in the project area.

Women’s Empowerment

Empowering women is an important component of Papua LNG’s community engagement and development efforts. In many parts of Papua New Guinea, women play a central role in family life, community cohesion and local economies. Several initiatives aim to promote women’s participation and security within both community activities and the workplace. Women are encouraged to take on leadership roles within the project, and today two Papua New Guinean women hold senior management positions as members of the Executive Management Committee.

Papua LNG also supports programs addressing family and sexual violence through its involvement in the Bel isi initiative, a collective action platform in Papua New Guinea dedicated to preventing violence and supporting survivors. As a corporate subscriber and sponsor of the initiative, the project participates in awareness and advocacy activities aimed at addressing gender-based violence.

In 2024 and 2025, Papua LNG participated in the Family and Sexual Violence Forum, which brought together organizations working to combat gender-based violence, including the growing concern of Sorcery Accusation Related Violence.

The project also supports initiatives that encourage women’s personal development and creative expression. In May 2024, more than 50 women from the villages of Wabo and Ura participated in an art program which offered participants an opportunity to explore creative expression, some for the very first time.

Education

Education plays a key role in strengthening communities and creating long-term opportunities for young people. Papua LNG supports initiatives aimed at improving access to education and learning conditions in the Project Area of Influence.
