Promoting Transparency in the Extractive Sector
The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) is a global standard that promotes open and accountable management of oil, gas and mineral resources. It requires the disclosure of information across the entire value chain, from contracts and production to revenue collection and allocation, helping strengthen governance and reduce the risk of corruption.
In Papua New Guinea, the extractive sector accounted for more than 27% of GDP and 88% of total exports in 2023. While it is a key driver of economic development and employment, it has also been associated with social and environmental challenges, including questions around revenue sharing and local impacts.
Supporting National Implementation and Dialogue
Papua LNG supports the objectives of the Papua New Guinea EITI, which plays a key role in improving transparency and fostering dialogue between government, industry, and civil society. Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative implementation has contributed to stronger coordination between public institutions and greater visibility on how revenues are generated and distributed, including at the subnational level.
By providing a shared platform for information and discussion, the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative helps build trust among stakeholders and supports informed decision-making. Its data has also contributed to tangible outcomes, such as enabling the Government to negotiate increased national participation in major projects.
A Long-Standing Commitment to Transparency
As operator of Papua LNG, TotalEnergies has supported the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative since its inception in 2003. The company publicly reports payments made to governments in all countries where it operates, detailing amounts by project and by type of payment. This commitment reflects a broader approach to transparency, ensuring that stakeholders have access to clear, reliable information on the economic contributions of extractive activities.
