Occupational Safety and Health
Protecting the health, safety and security of employees, contractors and surrounding communities is a fundamental priority for Papua LNG. Across both construction and future operations, all activities are designed and implemented in line with national regulations, international standards and the internal operating frameworks of TotalEnergies and ExxonMobil.
This commitment is reflected in a comprehensive approach that integrates safety, security and workforce health into every aspect of the project.
A comprehensive approach embeds safety, security and workforce health into every aspect of the project.
Safety
Nothing is more important than ensuring that everyone returns home safely. Papua LNG’s safety philosophy is built on a simple principle: prevent all incidents and create a workplace where everyone is safe.
This approach relies on equipping workers with the right knowledge, tools and training to carry out their tasks safely, while fostering a culture where every individual plays an active role in preventing accidents, injuries and occupational illnesses.
Project facilities are designed and operated according to the highest international safety standards. This includes the integration of advanced safety features such as buried pipelines, real-time monitoring and emergency shutdown systems, and clearly defined safety zones around operational areas. Appropriate safety equipment is provided across all worksites, ensuring that risks are managed proactively and consistently.
On 9 December 2024 in Sydney, TotalEnergies EP PNG Limited received the Outstanding Health and Safety Initiatives award at Papua New Guinea Investment Week, with Aymen Yahyaoui, Vice President, Exploration & Production Asia-Pacific and PNG Country Delegate, accepting on behalf of the team and recognizing the collective efforts of employees, communities and partners in strengthening health and safety across the project.
Security
Papua LNG operates within a robust and rigorously managed security framework designed to ensure a safe and stable environment throughout all project phases. Dedicated teams work closely with government authorities, contractors and local communities to identify potential risks early and implement effective mitigation measures.
This approach is based on strong coordination with the Papua New Guinea Government, including a formal partnership with the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary. Clear protocols and shared responsibilities help ensure that security measures are applied consistently, while supporting effective policing around project sites.
Key strengths of the security approach include:
- Protection of assets: personnel, physical assets, intellectual property and data are safeguarded through robust protocols
- Risk mitigation: proactive intelligence and controls help identify and address risks before they arise
- Business continuity and integrity: systems are in place to ensure uninterrupted operations
- Security culture: employees and contractors actively contribute to a vigilant and responsible security environment
- Government collaboration: ongoing coordination with national and local authorities strengthens overall security
Security is managed in a way that fully respects human rights. Papua LNG adheres to the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights, ensuring that all interactions with public and private security providers are conducted responsibly and transparently.
On-site medical facilities at the living camp ensure teams have access to essential care and support throughout the project
Workforce Health
Supporting the health and well-being of the workforce is essential to safe and effective operations. Papua LNG implements comprehensive health programs that benefit not only employees, but also their families and surrounding communities.
Key initiatives include:
- Health assessment programs: Raising awareness and promoting healthy lifestyles across the workforce and communities
- Vector control: Monitoring and reducing risks from mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue through surveillance, prevention programs and protective measures
- Tuberculosis control: Screening, awareness campaigns and clinical management to reduce transmission and support affected individuals
- Food safety: Regular audits of hygiene, food handling practices and kitchen standards across all sites
- Water safety: Continuous monitoring of potable water quality and rapid response to any issues
- Camp hygiene and safety: Regular inspections of sanitation, cleaning procedures, ventilation and fire safety systems
- Clinical services: Fully equipped medical facilities providing primary and occupational healthcare, supported by trained professionals and emergency response capabilities
- Industrial hygiene: Monitoring and managing exposure to workplace hazards, with a focus on reducing risks through improved processes and awareness
Through these programs, Papua LNG aims to build a healthier workforce, strengthen resilience and contribute positively to public health in Papua New Guinea.
